The Envy Pack

“Wrath is cruel; anger is overwhelming. But who can stand before envy?” (Prov. 27:4)

Imagine a room full of toy animals and a small child in the middle happily playing with a black horse. A second child walks into the room. Which toy does the second child want? Right, the black horse. Why is that? Because the first child is already happily playing with it. It’s the model’s desire that makes the toy desirable. Now, before the second child came in, the first child could have happily put the black horse down in order to play with the brown cow, but now he won’t. Why? Because the second child’s desire for the black horse has confirmed and reinforced that this is in fact the best toy. The second child has also become a model, leading to the tug-of-war experienced by every parent in the history of the world—one of the few experiences for which parents are not tempted to envy each other. And this triangular desire is found not only in the hearts of toddlers.

It explains why two roommates will wreck a long friendship competing for the attention of the same girl.

It explains why two co-workers will destroy a long partnership over a big client.

It explains advertising, branding, and the willingness of people to pretend to enjoy things that they hate because someone that they admire enjoys it.

It explains why a king who craves the esteem of his people would try to pin a young hero to the wall because he heard some women sing a song. – 1 Samuel 18

Envy is a corrupted form of imitation in which we move from wanting to be like our model, to competing with our model, to seeking to replace our model. It’s not that we merely want what the model has; we want to be the model. When the second child sees the first child playing, he doesn’t mainly want the toy. He wants the experience of joy that the first child is experiencing. If the first child gave up the black horse and began to play happily with the brown cow, the second child would now crave the brown cow. This is why the envious are so unhappy. The harder they try to compete and the more deeply they lust for the happiness of another, the more it eludes them.

Unmarried folks, when your friend gets a girlfriend or boyfriend, or gets engaged, or gets married, are you genuinely happy for them? Are you filled with gratitude that God has brought them such a wonderful blessing? Or inwardly are you carping about the fact that you’ve been passed by once again?

Young people, how do you respond when your friends and siblings are blessed by God? When they make the team or get an award or have lots of friends, are you happy for them? Do you communicate how excited and proud you are of them when they are blessed by God? Or do you eye them with resentment and displeasure?

Moms, what is your reaction when someone else’s child succeeds? Are you thrilled when someone else’s baby learns to walk before yours or learns to talk before yours? Are you constantly eyeing other moms like Saul eyed David, feeling anger and displeasure when God blesses their parenting? Do you murmur about other mothers behind their backs?

Men, how do you react when someone else gets a promotion at work? If you were the general in Saul’s army replaced by the young shepherd kid from Bethlehem, what would your reaction be? Would you throw your whole weight behind him? Or would you be tempted to undermine his authority and leadership?

Pastors, if another church in your town is fruitful with the gospel, what will you do? Will you grumble about it? Will you be filled with envy because so many people— perhaps even some who used to attend your church—go to that church or listen to that pastor?

Envy follows success with a hungry eye, incessantly asking questions like, “What about me?” or “Why not me?” It can stomach other people’s success to a point, which is why envy co-opts them and invites them into his or her home. But as soon as the newcomer begins to overshadow the host, envy turns like a ravenous wolf and gnaws itself into malice and seeks the ruin of the more successful.

Moreover, envy operates close to home. It attacks our closest relationships first. It makes fellowship thorny, difficult, and sometimes even impossible. We tend to envy those who are close at hand, who are like us, and who care about the same things that we do. Most young pastors don’t envy John Piper or Tim Keller or Al Mohler. While they certainly admire and respect them, we are not grieved by their fruitfulness and success because we put these men in a class of their own. Instead, we envy those whom we regard as our peers, or those a few steps ahead of us. As novelist Joseph Heller put it, “There is no disappointment so numbing . . . as someone no better than you achieving more.”

Ban on UNILAG SUG lifted

School Authorities Lift Ban on UNILAG SUG

Authorities of the University of Lagos
(UNILAG) on Friday said they had lifted
the ban on students’ unionism. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon
Bello, made the announcement at the
institution’s 2014/2015 matriculation in
Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
reports that the students union was
proscribed in 2005 under the former
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe,
sequel to a violent students’ unrest.
NAN reports that the vice-chancellor’s
lodge was attacked during the mayhem.
According to Bello, university education
should offer opportunity for well-
rounded development.
“You are leaders of tomorrow and as
such, opportunity for leadership
development should be unrestricted.
“With the recent endorsement of the
University of Lagos Students’ Union
Constitution, the authorities of the
institution has approved the unbanning
of full students’ union activities at the
university.”
Bello directed the Dean, Students’
Affairs, to immediately commence
arrangements for the election of the
Students’ Union executives, in line with
the new constitution.
He, however, urged the students to guard
against anything that was capable of
bringing back `the dark days’.
The vice-chancellor said that of the
61,931 candidates who applied during
the Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination, and 4, 361, from the Direct
Entry platform, only 26,641 scored 200
and above.
He said that 15,597 candidates wrote
post-UTME of the university.
Bello said that 5, 796 candidates were
offered provisional admission in the
UTME category and 2,805 in the direct
entry category, making a total of 8,601.
The vice chancellor, however, said that
after a thorough screening exercise, only
6,644, representing 10 per cent of the
total number of applicants, scaled the
registration procedures.
He advised the students to be good
ambassadors of their families, alma
maters, departments, faculties and the
university at large.

People you should meet in your 20s and why you should meet them

15 Types of People You Should Meet In Your 20s

The people you meet always add something to your life, be it negative or positive. Regardless of the type of impact they leave, you always learn a valuable lesson from their presence. Below are the different types of people you have to meet in your 20s to help shape you into the person you want to be.

1. The Giver

This person has dedicated their whole life to the simple art of giving. Be it giving a homeless person loose change or their time to an animal shelter, they are always giving. Being around this giving nature will unintentionally motivate you to give more of yourself too.

2. The Adventurer

The Adventurer is always going somewhere and always doing something unbelievably exciting. Although you may not always be up for everything they are up to, simply being around them when they do thrilling things will inspire you to break out of your comfort zone and do things you never would normally do. This person will push you to travel the world, which is what everybody in their twenties has to do at some point.

3. The Helper

This person is always willing to help no matter what their situation is. Whether it’s you in trouble or someone else, this person is always ready to help. Being around this person drives you to be more aware of people who are in need of help and extend your hand more than you usually would.

4. The Complainer

For this person, nothing is ever good enough. Nothing can ever meet their standards. When you are around them, all you ever hear is them complaining about something or the other. Although this may not be the healthiest environment, it helps you reflect on your views in life and makes you appreciate things more. Being around the complainer actually makes you complain less.

5. The Risk-taker

This person is constantly taking risks in their relationships or even in their workplace. They always seem to place everything on the line, which may not always work out well. Seeing them being extremely brave with their choices motivates you to be the same way. Even if you don’t become an extreme risk taker, you end up pushing yourself to be more risky than you usually would.

6. The Free-spirit

The Free-spirit has no ties to anything or anyone. They are constantly changing jobs and moving from one relationship to the next. They constantly move houses and sometimes countries. You may find it very hard to keep track of where this person is or what they are doing. Their freedom reminds you to not take life so seriously. They remind you how transient things can be, which helps you enjoy moments in life more.

7. The Stable One
The complete opposite of the Free-spirit, the Stable One has their life in order.
They have the standard nine to five job with the very stable relationship and a lease contract valid for more than a year. These people weren’t always this stable. In fact, they probably were messes a couple of years ago. Being around them reminds you that it’s possible to gain stability even if it seems like your life is a mess. After meeting them, you know that things will get better with time.

8. The Bossy One

The Bossy One feels the need to take charge in every situation, which can get incredibly irritating at times. The Bossy One shows you how important taking charge is but also when you need to take a step back.

9. The Honest One

This person will tell you to the truth no matter what. It doesn’ t matter if you are in tears, you know you’ll hear the honest answer to whatever question you just asked. Their blunt attitude towards life keeps you on track and reminds you how important the truth really is.

10. The Optimist

The Optimist always puts a positive spin on whatever situation they are in. Their blind positive attitude may be irritating at times, but it reminds you that you should always look on the bright side no matter what obstacles cross your path. 11.

11. The Pessimist
The Pessimist prevents you from floating away on The Optimist’s cloud of positivity. They keep you grounded by reminding you of all the things that could go wrong. Their constant negative attitude on life keeps you in touch with reality, but also makes sure you maintain a balance between being a realist and an idealist.

12. The Married One

This person has found the love of their life and has made the ultimate commitment. Knowing someone like this helps you figure out what you want, while subtly stressing the existence of love and its importance.

13. The Manipulative One
Everyone has to meet The Manipulative One at some point in their lives. This person manages to get what they want by using you as the pawn. After you realize how you’ve been manipulated, you learn to be more cautious in life. The Manipulative One teaches you to be stronger than you thought you could be.

14. The Backstabber
When you meet this person, you will trust them with everything only to have them use it against you. It’s important you meet someone like this to remind you that being trusting is the best quality you can have while betraying trust is the worst.

15. The Wise One

This person has a quote stored in their minds that applies to almost any situation you find yourself in. They are like a walking self-help book. They also have the best advice when you find yourself stuck. Being around The Wise One allows the wisdom to rub off on you as well.

I’m not sponsored by any Politician or political party.
My ideas sponsor me- Machiavelli

In what seems to be a hot political tussle within the College community, one of the Presidential aspirants, Alalade Felix aka Machiavelli has come out to address issues concerning his sponsors and other among other issues in an online interview…

You are a presidential candidate of the emancipation team. What's it about this team?

Machiavelli: Yes I am. The team was established to liberate Nigerian students union from the claw of imperialist (godfathers).

How does godfatherism affect the well-being of Nigerian Students?

Machiavelli: Their influence on Nigerian students is majorly tyrannical, anarchical

Machiavelli: They limit Nigerian students’ right to freedom of choice, thereby leaving them with no option than to accept their ill-fated decision. Nigerian students are not given the freedom to speak & express their opinion. Godfatherism dictates what they want, and not what students want.  Students’ voices are not heard and are discarded and disregarded.

Are Nigerian students ripe for the eradication of God fatherism as fatherism is highly rampant at all level of the nations politicking?

Machiavelli: Of course, they are solidly behind the emancipation team from time to time. To show their aspiration for changes

It was gathered that you've stepped on many toes in your quest for this liberation? How true

Machiavelli: Yes, because freedom cometh by struggle and contentious agitation.

Don't you fear your reputation and personality is getting affected?

Machiavelli:  No, because is a fight against injustice!!!

Fight against injustice, Can it be fought alone?

Machiavelli: No, because the power centered in hands of the masses. - The 'students'

How then prepared are you for the elections especially now that you have 2 other contestants?

Machiavelli: I am fully prepared, presently on campaign ground.

You sound so confident sir

Machiavelli: Yes, because students are desire the change now!!

It was said of you that you collected about half a million from an aspiring senator of the PDP

Machiavelli: Yes, I had of the information being disseminated by my major opponent that sum amount was given to sponsor my election. No amount was given to me by politicians or political party; I am only being sponsored by my idea.
I’m not sponsored by any Politician or political party.

7 Things You Will Regret Not Doing In Your 20s

7 Things You Will Regret Not Doing In Your 20s

Is it even possible to have regrets in your 20s? After all, every failure is just another lesson to be learned, right?  Turns out there are quite a few regrets you can have as a 20-something (although the list is much shorter than in your 30s). Redditors recently voiced things that they regret not doing in their 20s. Read their answers to make sure you won’t have any regrets in some of the best years of your life.

1. Not getting fit. This might surprise you. Your 20-something metabolism can make you complacent with your health, but start working on being fit and healthy earlier, and you definitely won’t regret it. After all, exercising and a healthy diet can increase your happiness and make all your experiences better. For example, if you’re fit, you’ll be able to take on bucket list trips that require a lot of endurance and a certain fitness level, like climbing Machu Picchu.

2. Not taking risks. So you’re heading down the traditional path to play it safe. Think of your 20s as a time for new experiences and don’t let your fears hold you back. You’re only young once!

3. Rushing to be a grown-up. You’re eager to get started on life, but take the time to really enjoy the experience of being in your 20s. You have the rest of your life to act like a grown-up. Don’t feel obligated to follow a certain timeline. “You don’t have to rush out and get a full-time career job at 21. You don’t have to shack up and marry the first person you meet at 24. You don’t have to buy a house or car and have babies by 27,” a reditt reader said: “A lot of people I know who were in a hurry all through their 20s are now ending their 20s and feeling a bit depressed because they quickly extinguished their youth and hit all the goal posts and now they’re like, ‘What now?’ You can’t go back, you can’t be young again, why throw it away so quickly?”

4. Not starting a retirement fund. Every personal finance expert recommends starting putting money towards your retirement fund as early as possible. This is because the earlier you make your contributions, the greater the rewards with the magic of compounding. This means the more money you put in earlier, the faster it grows.

5. Wasting time on people who don’t deserve your time. Yup, the old toxic friend syndrome. It seems like we have this regret in every decade of our life. But in your 20s, friends seem to take up more time and effort than other decades just because many of us are still looking for our significant others and haven’t had kids yet. Make sure that the time you spend on your friends is well spent and that you’re cultivating friendships that will last a lifetime.

6. Not studying or moving abroad. You usually have fewer obligations in your 20s, so it’s a good time to pack up and actually live overseas for a while. (Not necessarily outside your country) It’ s a completely different experience from justtravelling, and it’s worth doing if you can make it work. You’ll be out of your comfort zone culturally and in every other way possible, which is a tremendous learning experience that will open up your perspectives and world view.

7. Staying in bad relationships. This goes hand in hand with friends you shouldn’t waste time on. Your 20s will pass by in a flash, so make sure you’re spending it with the right people! Bad relationships — be they romantic or platonic — can really do a number on your self esteem, so don’t let them drag you down.

Wishing you a blooming transition from young adults into full adulthood.

4years of impactful service

Helen Ayoleyi

If among many good things I can attribute this young lady with, it is the prowess of her efo riro. Excellently delicious! I ate her efo once and that kept me
Out

craving for more. I requested for more, but this time, it was with a dinner with her fiancĂ©.

Helen Ayoleyi is a dynamic, intelligent and enterprising young lady. Our relationship dates back as far as 2007, when she was a junior colleague in Wesley College of Science, Elekuro, Ibadan. I am not exactly sure if we at any point had reasons to talk until we met in Ilesa in 2012. To say she hasn't been a blessing in my academic sojourn so far will be far from the truth.

This epic experience in 2013 will be too soon to forget. I was in 300level and the school was in its annual strike around that time. After working late into the night, I found out that I was gradually feeling pain on my right lap, the pain got so intense that I had to stand from my chair and lay on my mattress. The pain aggravated each minute and my body began to feel great discomfort.  – Temperature rising fast, head strongly aching. It was hell and I just couldn’t sleep all night. More disturbing, students are away from school because of the ‘annual’ strike and there was no one to call to rescue. (I could even be so weakling when I am sick).

But thank God for Helen alongside Samuel. I put a call through in the very wee hours of the day. And she came immediately. She went the extra mile to ensure that I have enough medical attention before I was transferred home. She exemplified the roles of a good mother in the making & that of a Good Samaritan. I can be sure she's one to really look up to in the future.

She is young & vibrant. Loaded and filled with ideas. Passionate and intelligent. I won't be surprised if in few years’ time, she controls the economic sphere of this country as her entrepreneurial spirit will lead her through. Her approach to life is epochal and the world should eagerly wait for her arrival. She sees the world from a matured point of view and deals with precisely and accurately.

She made me understand that a friend is not one that you should always have seasons of uncensored laughter and jokes, not one that gives you efo riro + semo to devour always,  but one who challenges your wrong  ideologies, gives you reasons to reconsider your ways and place you high on relational demands, so you can go beyond your limits. Helen never fails in offering advice when and where necessary. She was never found wanting in rendering genuine opinion on leadership stints. Interestingly still, on many occasions, we fight and pick up quarrel so many times, but each of those fight has makes us respect ourselves the more.

Thanks for being part of the story. Let’s keep it going. I respect your personality.

self sufficient undergraduates

Below are the different ways to make money as a student. These researches, were all gotten from vaious platform like the Myed.ng, business.org, imc.com and so many others and today, i find it wise to share these tips with you.

WHY DO YOU NEED THIS TIPS ?

As a student, you tend to face so many challenges, ranging from tution fee, hostel fee and other fee. Let me not even speak about those ones now, because you tend to pay for those ones once in a year But Do you Know that the money you use in Feeding and buying Materials Is even more greater then the amount you spend for school fees and other fees and obviously, they are the ones that tend to consume more cash.

What are these other challenges?
-Feeding
-Photocopying
-Subscriptions & phone recharge
-Departmental dues
-Hostel Dues
-Faculty dues…. Etc

1.Photography: The Photography business has grown from its state in the days to a renowned profession which people are making a fortune out of. Starting this business in small scale means youre not  just making money at the moment but securing a strong financial future for yourself. You know how students especially the female folks love taking pictures, this is the perfect time to make maximum use of this opportunity. you don’t need much to start, just save a little money for a good camera, with a bit of creativity and you’re good to go.

Please note that doing photography professionally requires just more than the previous requirements mentioned but this should be enough to get you started. you can also take passport photographs during school registrations.

Take away: see Segun Oyebade photography and Passion photography (my two student photographer friends) for more information

2.Sale of Fashion Items: Interesting thing about this business is that you’d succeed no matter your gender. Both male and female wears rocks on Nigerian campuses and who else will succeed more if not their fellow students. I know of a guy who is living comfortably and paying school fees only by selling men under-wears, yes, Just men under wears, most of the times he travels out to the region where these boxer shorts are at a very low prize, buys them and bring them to his school. He sells these boxer shorts for virtually everybody in his region ranging from his lecturers down to his fellow students. I don’t want to go into details on how much these things cost, but its best you do your home work.

3.T-Shirt Customization: This business requires your creativity as a student. looking around you, you’ll notice students love fancy and funky stuffs. learning the art of this business means you’ll have fellow students begging you to collect their money for a t-shirt write up. You can learn this simple business during your stay at home/holiday. You
can start in small scale by doing the write ups on your own T-shirt, friends will like it and ask you to even do for them. Just start something. Remember the “My Oga at the Top Saga”? you see
those custom t-shirts? Need i say more? –

Get more information at Light Speed Grafix, a customization outfit owned by my friend Segun Oyebade.

4.Online Registration: Yes, if you have a laptop and a bit of computer knowledge, i don’t know what stops you from enjoying both the pleasure and money derived from this Job. you can register virtually everything online. Course Registration, Post-UTME Registration, JAMB Registration, Job Application, etc.
You can even make extra cash from typing assignments and projects for fellow students. Do i also need to tell you the thousands of Naira made during post UTME registrations? All the tools you need to make good money are all around you, you Just need to identify one and work your way through it. -

5.Website design and hosting: i can authoritatively tell you students are taping into the hidden money from this lucrative business. It may take a while to learn the entire concept of how this things work but its something you can easily do while you are home for
holidays. Website Design may sound a bit complex so you might want to manage the little you get from setting up blogs for fellow students. This write up may not make sense to you because you don’t know a thing about website design, that is why i’ll advice you to learn under anybody who is established in it already. Look around your campus, there are students who do well comfortably with this business, it wouldn’t hurt much to meet them to put you through.
